Medical transcription is a great job to have as a stay at home mom… if you can get a job doing it. Even if you’ve gone to school for it, most places don’t want to hire people who don’t have a lot of experience doing it simply because it takes a little while to get “good” at it. A friend of mine does medical transcription and makes decent money without having to work very many hours… but he’s been doing it for years and has a lot of experience. It would be a good job to have if you’re already established, but it would be difficult getting into it from the start and “learning the ropes,” so to speak, as a stay at home mom.

I am a stay at home mom right now and am actually working to get my certificate to become a medical transcriptionist. I researched and researched to find the best online courses to take. I finally decided to go to Career Step. Just go to. They can send you free info. on their courses. I would highly recommend them to you if you were looking to do this. You will have to pay for the courses but to find a legitimate job that’s not a scam, expect to pay. This is not a scam, I promise. A medical transcriptionist makes good $. You can work part time or full time from home. It can take anywhere from 6 months to a year or longer to get your certificate. The good thing about it is you can work at your own pace. I still have not graduated yet, but am looking forward to it. Good luck!

I took an extensive (and expensive) medical transcription course in order to work from home. The course itself took about 6 or 7 months to complete. I then began looking for jobs. All I could find was in office positions. If I came across any home positions, 2 years office experience was needed. I don’t think it’s a scam, just sounds better than it really is. Once you have the experience, you could probably do pretty well. The course was pretty rough, it’s a much harder job than I ever imagined. I never ended up getting a job doing medical transcription. Just a waste of money for me. That and the whole point of taking the course was so I could stay home with my daughter, not go work for 2 years somewhere else. If you are going to look into courses, try Career Step: Medical Transcription Course. You can just search on Career Step. There is also another website that is for work at home moms. They have all kinds of info and job postings that they have already checked to make sure they are not scams. I think that website is. Good luck to you!

I have my medical transcription certificate, but couldnt find any jobs from home. Most places want you to have 2-5 years “in house” experience before they will hire you. I suppose its to see your work before they hire you. Once you get the experience and can find work from home, its actually a great “job”. My sisters-in-law both work from home and have for 4-5 years. They both love it and make excellent money.
The course I took was thru my local community college and only took me 3 months. You will usually have to take medical terminology first, but some offer the courses together. It helped that I had worked in the medical field before.
Just FYI-if you have to pay THEM…its a scam. Real jobs will not make you pay in order to hire you!

My mom is a medical transcriptionist from home. She took a course, like the ones you see advertised on TV. She didn’t think it totally prepared her, but she fortunately got on with a company who was willing to train her.
Most companies want several years experience before they’ll hire you.
You also should look at the difference between being an employee or an independant contractor. Employee gets benefits but you usually gotta set hours and meet minimums. ICs are usually more free to work when they want/can, but no benefits.
Also consider the quality of work. So many doctors are foreign and VERY hard to understand. Also, depending on the system the company uses, sound quality could ****.
Don’t think it’s an easy job you can just pick up and do at will with kids running around. My mom said there was no way she ever could have done it when my bro and I were kids.
Wow, I sound really negative…lets go positive for a little while.
You can work from home in my jammies!
If you’re a night owl, you can set your hours to work at night!
sorry, that’s all the positive I can think of now…my mom’s been struggling with her company for a couple years now, so all I hear is negative. Give it a try if you want…or you could give general transcription a shot. It doesn’t pay as well, but it’s usually easier and more flexible

I was a medical transcriptionist working from home for 13 years.
Many transcriptionists get their training through a course of study while others carry their medical terminology knowledge with them from other health related fields. You would need to get the terminology down, and then get started. Many companies want experience so there’s a catch-22. However, doctors and hospitals may be hiring, and after a time you can work from home as many transcriptionists do.
There’s some excellent information for anyone considering a career in this field in the website listed below. No affiliation with any school or products, just good info, including real job listings in coding, billing, and transcription.

It’s a legit career choice; however, you must choose a reputable training program or its a waste of money. Learning MT is not easy, but is worth the effort if you like that type of work. Best wishes to you.
